THE SOUND & SPIRIT OF MAKYUNG


During her lifetime, Khatijah Awang as the Primadonna of Makyung not only because of her excellelent acting, dancing and singing but also because of her role in promoting this art form and saving it from extinction. she was born on 13 august 1941 in pasir mas, kelantan adn began studying the makyung dance steps from an early age. Being taught by her own mother in law. Che kemala who was one of several makyung pactitiorners at that time. Together with her husband Zkaria abbdullah, Khatijah founded the Kumpulan Seri Temenggung in Kota Bharu, Klantan and gave performaces not only in the state but outside the country as well. Ever since the National Arts Academy was formed in 1994 till 13 September 2001 when she drew her last breath, Khatijah devoted her energies to teaching the makyung to students of the Acedemy The Malaysian Goverment honoured her with the National Arts Award in 1999.
